ICOS Ecosystem station Fendt is situated in the middle of a large pasture area in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. The location represents the most typical farmland for the northern slopes of the Alps in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The research site Fendt is located in the north of the town Peissenberg, in the pre-alpine region of upper Bavaria, southern Germany. The site is situated in the center of a drained alluvial area and bordered by forested hills on the west and east. According to a historical map the site Fendt was treeless for at least 150-200 years. Crop and corn cultivation plays only a minor role in the pre-alpine region, thus, it is very likely that the site was a managed grassland in the last two centuries. So the typical land use in the pre-alpine area is grazed or/and mowed grasslands.
