The data is a subset of a global daily dataset of CH₄ emissions from mineral soil for 1981–2023, simulated using the LPJ-GUESS dynamic global vegetation model at 0.5° spatial resolution. The dataset was generated by driving LPJ-GUESS (version 4.1, revision 12177) with time-series inputs, including ERA5 climate forcing, atmospheric CO₂ concentrations, nitrogen deposition, and land-use data.

Mineral soil with relatively high soil moisture content enables methanogenic archaea to produce CH₄. Spahni et al. (2011) (https://doi.org/10.5194/bg-8-1643-2011) used water filled pore space (WFP) to represent soil moisture, above a certain threshold of WFP, a portion of the CH₄ generated within soil and diffuses into the atmosphere without being oxidized.
