The dataset contains 214Po based 222Rn activity concentration measurements. The Heidelberg Radon Monitor (HRM) is a static filter detector that accumulates and measures the alpha decay of atmospheric 214Polonium (214Po), a progeny of 222Radon (222Rn). These measurements can be used to derive atmospheric 222Rn activity concentrations using the so-called Stockburger algorithm (Stockburger, 1960; Stockburger and Sittkus, 1966). The HRM is a compact and easy to use instrument, but it has some important limitations due to the fact that it measures 222Rn progeny and not 222Rn itself. These lead to the following corrections: 1: The line loss correction depends on the length of the sampling line. It is necessary because of the deposition of aerosols and their travel time through the long tube. It is applied for the line length from 15 m (Levin et al., 2017). 2: The 214Po - 222Rn disequilibrium correction is applied when sampling below ca. 80 m a.g.l. to compensate for the less than perfect secular equilibrium between 222Rn and its progeny. The disequilibrium is negligible for sampling heights above ca. 80 m a.g.l. (Schmithüsen et al., 2017; Grossi et al., 2020). 3: Humidity flagging, which is determined by the loss of progeny due to aerosol scavenging and subsequent wet deposition at very high ambient humidity (RH). The HRM 214Po measurements during the >98% RH events cannot be considered as 222Rn activity measurements (Gachkivskyi et al., in preparation). The methodology and the automated algorithm for the evaluation of the spectra are described in detail in Levin et al. (2002) and Gachkivskyi and Levin (2022).
