Station Nord is a Danish Military base with a permanent staff of 6 persons. During the summer June-August there is usually up to 50 guests on the base, mostly construction workers. All roads are gravel roads, and there is a 1800 m long airstrip and an apron in connection to the base (see photo) A generator, providing power to the base, is located approx. 240 meters NE of the 80 meter mast. The exhaust height for the generator is approx.6 meter above ground. There are no settlements within a 100 km radius from Station Nord. (Nearest settlements are Thule Air Base approx. 1200 km towards south-west and Danmarkshavn approx. 535 km towards south-south-east).

Western directions: a shore line is going North-South approx. 1050 m from the site, and the closest point of Princess Dagmar Island (in Danish: Prinsesse Dagmar Ø) is approx. 11 km away. The island lies in a bay of the Wandel Sea formed by the confluence of Denmark Sound and Independence Sound. The island has an area of 144.5 km ², and the tallest point is approx. 180 m. Southern directions: a flat area with some mountains approx. 70 km away Eastern direction: a flat area with a hilly area approx. 3.2 km away from the site. The height of the hill is approx. 170 m. The icecap starts approx. 16 km away. Northern directions: directly towards north and northwest is just open water/sea ice in the Wandel Sea, while towards northeast there an icecap which starts approx. 20 km away. The icecap itself reaches an altitude of max. 965 m. The whole area around Station Nord is usually covered by snow/ice from September – July, in some years the snow doesn’t really disappear. The vegetation is very sparse, and consists of smaller groups of flowers, some grasses, but without bushes or trees. There are a few open small meltwater ponds in the area during the summer.
