tall tower, almost co-located (about 1 km) ACTRIS aerosol in situ and remote sensing, clouds and trace gases remote sensing station
CNR-IMAA
The tower will be easily accessible via an existing paved road that allows it to be reached by different types of vehicles (cars, vans, etc.) throughout the year. All levels of the tall tower will be accessible by an internal staircase with ramps of about 1.20 m wide, 17 cm raised, and 25-30 cm tread. The tower will also be equipped with an internal lift with stops at the three planned sampling heights (at about 10 m, 50 m, and 100 m). The dimensions of the lift cabin will be such to allow the transport of people and equipment.

A reliable internet connection via the CNR-IMAA network will be available
The closest city to the measurement station is Potenza (~9 km NE, 819 m a.s.l., 65.420 inhabitants, 383 inhabitants/km2). Moreover, some small villages (the most populous one has less than 7.500 inhabitants) can be found within 10 km from the site. Larger cities in the further surroundings (~15-100 km) are: Altamura (~75 km ENE, 70.595 inhabitants), Barletta (~94 km NE, 92,510 inhabitants), Matera (~75 km E, 59.854 inhabitants), Salerno (~90 km W, 128.302 inhabitants), Avellino (~83 km WNW, 52.512 inhabitants), Benevento (~97 km NW, 59.032 inhabitants), Foggia (~98 km N, 146,480 inhabitants). Population data are all referred to March 2022 (Source: Italian National Institute of Statistics - ISTAT). A high-speed road is located 1 km north of the site while the nearest highway (A3) is about 30 km west of the site. Finally, according to the register of authorizations to emit Greenhouse Gases (GHG) maintained by the Italian Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea Protection (https://www.registroets.it/), only two plants authorized to emit GHG are located near the site to date: Siderpotenza S.p.A. (a steel plant 10 km ENE from the site) and Lucart S.p.A. (a small paper mill 13 km NNE from the site). Both of them are located downstream of the prevailing wind direction. At longer distances there are: ENI S.p.A. (extraction and pre-treatment of oil and gas, 35 km SSE), Cementeria Costantinopoli s.r.l. (a cement plant, 38 km N), Fenice S.p.A. (thermoelectric power plant, 50 km N), Eugea Mediterranea S.p.A. (processing and preservation of fruit and vegetables, 90km N), Scianatico Laterizi s.r.l. (brick production, 70 km N), Totalenergies S.p.A.(extraction and pre-treatment of oil and gas, 75 km SSE). Given the position of these industrial plants with respect to the prevailing wind direction (W-WSW-SW), no significant effects are expected on GHG observations.

The site is located on the Southern Apennine in Italy, in a plain surrounded by low mountains, less than 150 km away from the West, South and East coasts. Therefore, it operates in a typical mountain weather strongly influenced by Mediterranean atmospheric circulation, resulting in generally dry, hot summers and cold winters. Indeed, dew point temperatures measured at the station between 2018 and 2021 exceeded 15 °C only during the summer period. Most of the surrounding land is classified as arable crops in non-irrigated areas, followed by broad-leaved woods and coniferous forests, sclerophilous or wooded/shrubby areas and natural grazing areas and grasslands.
