The Tall Tower Torfhaus is situated in the middle of the low mountain range Harz in Lower Saxony, Germany. The Harz has a length of 110 kilometres, and a width of 35 kilometres. It occupies an area of 2226 square kilometres, and is divided into the Upper Harz (Oberharz) in the northwest, which is up to 800 m high, apart from the 1100 m high Brocken massif, and the Lower Harz (Unterharz) in the east which is up to around 400 m high and whose plateaus are capable of supporting arable farming. Marked elevations around the station are: Abbenstein (north - 769 m.a.s.l.), Brocken (east - 1141 m.a.s.l.), Wurmberg (south - 971 m.a.s.l.), Bruchberg (west - 927 m.a.s.l.); The Station is situated within the Harz National Park (250 square kilometres) which is not exploited economically. Most of the area within the National Park is covered by Needle-wood forests, small pastures, and mires. Main land use outside the National Park is dominated by forest and agricultural fields.
