The station includes a 120m tall tower and 2 portable and modular buildings fully equipped. A 100 m2 permanent building is planned for 2017/2018. Accommodations are available in the Houdelaincourt village and in the neighboring villages. The OPE station is measuring a complete set of in situ measurements of the meteorological parameters, gas phase (CO2, CH4, N2O, CO, O3, NOx, SO2) and particulate phase (size distribution, absorption and diffusion coefficients, number and mass, chemical composition, radioactivity).
The station is located at the top of the hill above the Houdelaincourt village. The station is accessible year-round by car using a 2km dirt road from the Houdelaincourt village. In case of snow, the car must be equipped. Trucks can access the station except during certain road condition (thaw period)

The OPE atmospheric station (395 m asl) is located on the eastern edge of the Paris Basin. The landscape consists of undulated eroded limestone plateaux dissected by a few SE-NW valleys (60 to 80m). It is a rural area with large crop fields, some pastures and forest patches of different areas. Some villages are encountered along the valleys which are the historical exchange routes. Dominating Land Cover Types according to Corine Land Cover 2012 in the 25km / 100 km surroundings: Artificial surfaces 2% 4% Arable land 39% 44% Pastures 14% 18% Forest 44% 34%
The OPE station is part of the French aerosol network (ATMOS) contributing to ACTRIS-2 and AERONET program. It is part of the OPERA network for the ambient air radioactivity monitoring. It is contributing to the French air quality monitoring network and to EMEP.
