BE-Wm1 is one of the two adjacent crop sites located approximately 20 km northeast of Antwerp, Belgium. The cropland area covers approximately 25 ha and is owned and managed by the Abdij der Trappisten van Westmalle, a Cistercian monastery with a long agricultural tradition. Cropping systems in this area are typically based on silage maize (Zea mays), often combined with winter barley (Hordeum vulgare) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), the latter commonly grown in autumn and winter as a cover or forage crop. The field has been managed according to agroecological principles, featuring a permanent vegetation cover composed of a diverse mixture of grasses, herbs and legumes.
