The research site Fendt is located in the north of the town Peissenberg, in the pre-alpine region of upper Bavaria, southern Germany. The site is situated in the center of a drained alluvial area and bordered by forested hills on the west and east. According to a historical map the site Fendt was treeless for at least 150-200 years. Crop and corn cultivation plays only a minor role in the pre-alpine region, thus, it is very likely that the site was a managed grassland in the last two centuries. So the typical land use in the pre-alpine area is grazed or/and mowed grasslands.
