The study site is located at the core zone of Mai Po Nature Reserve (MPNR), northwestern corner of Hong Kong SAR, China. It is actively managed by the World Wide Fund for Hong Kong (WWF HK) as well as Hong Kong Police Force. Mai Po has been part of the Inner Deep Bay Ramsar wetland since 1995. ,The spatial extent of mangroves in MPNR, covering an area of 115 ha, is the largest mangrove stand at Hong Kong. Our study area is dominated by two native species, Kandelia obovata and Acanthus ilicifolius. Ages of K. obovata are over 50 years. The canopy height averages 6.7 m with an average diameter at breast height (DBH) 7.6 cm, and the density is 0.7 trees m-2. The understory consisted of a scattered distribution of A. ilicifolius saplings. Total soil organic carbon contents were 34.3 g kg-1 and 31.1 g kg-1 for 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm depth of sediment. The mangroves growing here are influenced by semidiurnal tides. A two-year result from monthly-based field campaigns recording the volumetric soil moisture content of sediment surface when exposed to air indicated a consistent wet condition (45.7% ± 1.2%, n = 186). Hydrology in MPNR is largely influenced by the Pearl River that is the largest river in southern China. ,
