The study was conducted in tropical peatlands in the upper catchment of the Sebangau River near Palangkaraya, the capital city of Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. In Central Kalimantan, a large peatland area was deforested and drained during the late 1990s, mainly to develop farmlands according to a national project: the Mega Rice Project (MRP). The forest had also been selectively logged until the end of the 1990s. Dominant tree species and the microtopography of the forest floor resembled those at the ID-Puf site. A large canal (25 m wide × 3.5?4.5 m deep) that was excavated in 1996 and 1997 has functioned effectively to facilitate drainage of the forest. A 50 m high tower was built for flux measurement in 2001. The tower is located about 400 m from the canal. Fetches were about 400, 500, 1500 m, and longer than 5000 m, respectively, for the north, east, west, and south directions. The turbulent fluxes of sensible heat, latent heat, CO2 were measured using the eddy covariance system.
