The field site has been under a permanent grassland management for >50 years, where the management typically consists of stripped-grazing by Holstein Frisian dairy cows and an average stocking density 2.1-2.4 LSU ha-1. The last reseeding event occurred 10 years ago and there are no concrete plans to reseed in the short-term. The mean ± standard deviation annual air temperature and rainfall (1954-2009) for this region is 9.5 ± 5.1 °C and 822 ± 127 mm, respectively. The mean soil pH, total carbon (%), total nitrogen (%) and bulk density at 0-10 cm is 5.6, 41.1%, 1.95% and 0.30 g/cm3, respectively. The sward type is perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) with clover
