The Alps Field Science Education and Research Center (AFC), attached to the Faculty of Agriculture, Shinshu University, was established as a place to practice field science in high-country and mountainous areas, and various research and practical training programs are conducted at four stations in Nagano Prefecture.,The Nishikoma Experimental Forest covers a total area of about 250 ha on the east side of Kiso Komagatake in the Central Alps, from 1410 m to 2672 m above sea level.,In addition to an artificial forest of Japanese larch, most of the area is covered by subalpine and alpine natural forests (secondary forests) of Japanese spruce, Japanese white pine, and Japanese Judas tree.,The vegetation spreads vertically and is home to abundant wildlife.,Plots have been set up every 200 m between approximately 2000 m and 2600 m above sea level in the Experiment Forest, and research studies on vegetation and plant growth have been conducted.,At the top of the mountain, weather observation equipment has been installed to measure temperatures.,The turbulent fluxes of sensible heat, latent heat, CO2 were measured using the eddy covariance system.
