The coconut plantation was part of the Vanuatu Agricultural Research and Technical Centre (VARTC), covering around 400 ha at Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu, South Pacific. The climate was tropical and humid. The soil profiles originated from ancient volcanic ashes, deep by 1–2.5 m and overlying limestone. Clay and fine silts accounted for more than 80% of the total. The stand was row-planted in 1983 with the Vanuatu Red Dwarf x Vanuatu Tall hybrid coconut variety. More than 20 grass species composed the under-storey. It is a plantation, export of albumen only (copra). Periodic (2 months) slash of grass under-storey. No fertilizer. No pruning.
