The container ship Jona Sophie is owned by the company Reederei Stefan Patjens GmbH & Co. KG (Germany) and operated in Spain by NISA Marítima. Continuous measurements of partial pressure of CO₂ (pCO₂) in both the atmosphere and surface seawater were conducted from February 2019 to February 2025, when the vessel ceased operations in the region. During this period, the ship completed weekly voyages between the Canary Islands and Barcelona. Two new operational alternatives are currently under evaluation: A container ship service operating twice weekly between the Canary Islands and southern Spain, scheduled to commence in January 2026 (already approved). A second container ship maintaining the original route between the Canary Islands and Barcelona, which is still under consideration. The project is coordinated by the QUIMA-IOCAG research group at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, under the supervision of Dr. Melchor González (Principal Investigator).
