The research vessel FS Polarstern is owned by the Federal Republic of Germany and is run by the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven; this is also the home port of the ice breaker. The ship operates both in the Arctic and in the Antarctic and plies the Atlantic generally twice a year. Measurements of pCO2 in the surface ocean and in the atmosphere have been conducted since 2007.
